The Eurostat dataset displays the length of railway lines equipped with the railway traffic management systems (ERTMS) (unit: km and per cent) by type of signaling and countries for the years 2019-2024. The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is composed of automatic train protection, radio communication and automated train operation. The European Train Control System (ETCS) is the standard European system for automatic train protection. It ensures a high level of safety, reliability, performance and interoperability at European level - not only at national level like other Train Protection Systems (TPS). Some countries have decided to deploy ETCS on their entire rail network, thus going beyond the EU legal requirements of deployment on trans-European transport network (TEN-T). The current TEN-T policy states that ERTMS shall be deployed in full on the core railway network by 2030. The types of signaling are classified as: track-based (ETCS level 1), radio-signal (ETCS level 2). The data is available for the following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom. The dataset is updated annually.
