| Overview Text | Transport perfomance data are differentiated by powertrain, time period, size class, mode and vehicle class. The data are based on an analysis conducted by the ifeu – Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg, using the German Emissions Inventory Model (TREMOD) |

| Introduction and key takeaways | Passenger-kilometres (pkm) decreased by 10% over the ten-year period, reaching 894 billion pkm in 2024. In contrast, freight transport performance, measured in tonne-kilometres (tkm), increased by 5% over the same timeframe. The share of cars in motorised road passenger transport performance remains relatively stable throughout the period and amounts to around 90% in 2024. By contrast, bus transport performance varies significantly, particularly during the COVID crisis years. After peaking in 2016 at nearly 10% of total pkm, the bus share fell to 4.9% in 2019, before recovering to around 8.5% in the last two years. Almost all road freight transport, measured in tonnes transported, is carried by trucks and lorries, with trucks playing the dominant role. Although lorries account for only about 8.5% of total freight transport performance, their share has gradually increased over the period. |
