          Introduction and key takeaways

The data show the development of energy consumption in the road sector in Germany from 2014 to 2024, based on TREMOD data.

From 2014 to 2019, road energy consumption increased steadily, rising from just above 2.9 EJ in 2014 to a peak of just under 2.9 EJ in 2019. In 2020, there was a sharp drop due to the pandemic. After that, consumption partially increased, remaining 12% below the 2019 level. In 2024, BEV vehicle consumption accounted for only 0.8% of the total road energy consumption, while diesel accounted for 62.7% and gasoline for 34.2%.

Cars account for over 60% of the total direct energy consumption of road transport in Germany, showing a slight decrease of 2 percentage points since 2014. Trucks and lorries take second place with 26% of the total, slightly increasing since 2014. Two-wheelers remain below 2%.
