Overview Text

The data show the development of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Germany as declared to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for reporting purposes since 1990 to 2024, including emissions from the provision of energy sources (upstream chain) for the following modes of road pasenger transportation (with motorised two-wheelers, cars and buses on domestic territory), road freight transport (road freight transport with light and heavy commercial vehicles on domestic territory), rail transportation (railways, trams, city railways and underground railways), water transportation (freight transport with inland waterway vessels) and aviation (air traffic departing from Germany to the first stopover, including the additional climate impact at cruising altitude).

Road transport accounts for the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions over the entire time series (80% in 1990 to 74% in 2024), followed by air transport. Greenhouse gas emissions from road transport increased by 35% between 1990 and 2019 and by 23% by 2024. Air traffic increased by 159% between 1990 and 2019 and by 127% by 2024. Greenhouse gas emissions from rail transport fell by 54% between 1990 and 2024. Greenhouse gas emissions from inland waterway transport fell by 35% between 1990 and 2024.

Overall, greenhouse gas emissions for all modes of transport considered increased by 45% between 1990 and 2019 and by 31% by 2024.
